Not too long ago, a university in India held a ceremony at their Global Vision Academy to recognize a man who turned a small meat supply company into a global network that supplies supermarkets and fast food chains including McDonald’s all over the world. That man is Sheldon Lavin of OSI Industries who was once a financier who used his financial growth strategies to build a huge food portfolio at OSI. Lavin was honored to receive this award and for him, he attributes the company’s sustainability model to its success. Sustainability, he says not only is about being conscious about how the company operations affect the environment, but also about how it’s socially responsible, and even more so responsible in every nation’s economy.
Sheldon Lavin worked at an investment bank for years before he met the owners of Otto & Sons, the name of OSI before it was later changed. He left that position to run his own consulting firm where he met the owners of Otto & Sons and subsequently served as a financing middleman. He became more involved with the company as the years went on, and as Otto & Sons partner McDonald’s announced plans to open new restaurant locations they asked that Sheldon Lavin take a role in leading Otto & Sons. He was made a partner owner in the company and appointed CEO and Chairman where he has served for over 40 years, but even now he doesn’t plan on retiring just yet.
Sheldon Lavin has built a culture not only of sustainability, but also of respect and family in the way everyone is treated. He even once said in an interview that he likes being called Shelly instead of Mr. Lavin. Along with the Global Visionary award, he’s also received the Edward C. Jones community service award for his partnering OSI Industries with non-profit groups like the Chicago Inner City Foundation and the Boys and Girls Clubs. You can usually see more statements from Lavin by going to OSI’s Facebook page.

The food manufacturing industry has enormous market demands ranging from the manufacturing bit to the supply chain resolutions highly needed. This requires huge financial resources and high infrastructure for the processes of development, production and distribution.
The OSI industries began as two small obscure family businesses that later joined hands to supply freshly ground beef. Over the years, the industries took off and became a franchise model supplying the ever-growing number of restaurants.
They then transitioned from regional to national and international suppliers providing consistent products. With the pressure to supply gaining momentum, they adopted a technological process of freezing food with nitrogen improving efficiency and affordability. This created new openings for expansion and cost reduction in the food sector.
Its series of development and mutual collaborations in different countries has made OSI industries a global food provider. With more than sixty-five facilities in more than seventeen countries, the industries can deliver custom-made food products and maintains consistency and responsiveness.
The main partner was McDonalds, but with the continued expansion the industries acquired new clients such as Starbucks, Subway and Burger King among others. It also expanded its food production from sausages, bacon and hot dogs to producing poultry products.
OSI industries, over the last decade, have grown into the largest protein products producer including new products like sausages and pizza. It has also diversified to new territories with the Asian market being the most recent.
Current OSI industries’ operations involve producing new and better products through customer feedback services. This enables the company to stay abreast of the needs of the customers since the consumers become sophisticated and knowledgeable about their tastes and preferences.
Safety and quality is an important factor in the food production industry. The OSI industries have integrated new safety techniques as well as partnering with producers to improve the quality of products.
These procedures are also aimed at the environmental effects of food production. This has bagged the industries several awards for their environmental endeavors including the British safety council for exemplary management among others.
OSI Industries is currently one of the largest food processing companies in the world, with operations in 17 countries and tens of thousands of employees. OSI wasn’t always this large provider, its beginnings were modest, but thanks to a good product the company has been able to grow impressively. In the history of over 100 years, it has evolved and has spread into 65 different locations stationed all over the world.
Beginnings and first break into a major business
Otto Kolschowsky emigrated from Germany to the U.S. in 1907 and landed in Chicago Illinois. Two years after arriving, in 1909, he opened his first business. It was a small and humble retail meat market and butcher shop on the west side of Oak Park, Chicago. Within a decade the business had grown into wholesale and it was soon renamed Otto & Sons in 1928. The family business continued to see a steady income for the next decades until 1955 when it landed a deal as a meat supplier for the first McDonalds in Des Plaines and things began to boom.
Further expansion and surge
For the next twenty years, the business grew as McDonald’s quickly expanded.OSI’s growth was inevitable as it was riding on the passenger seat of the McDonald’s ride to the top. In 1975 Otto & Sons became OSI Industries, by this time part of the company was solely focused on supplying the burger chain and another of its branches began supplying heavily to other businesses. Seeing the company had far more potential for growth, an investor and banker by the name of Sheldon Lavin decided to join as part owner. Lavin eventually became the Chairman and CEO, and through his leadership, OSI expanded worldwide. In the past 40 years, the company has grown dramatically and is now a worldwide empire supplying chains like Pizza Hut, Starbucks, and Subway among so many others.
OSI Industries is a colossal example of what the American dream can become for an immigrant family. What began as a corner butcher shop in Chicago eventually turned into a wholesale business, that appeared to be a great accomplishment for founders; but there was more coming. That business dream evolved into one of the biggest food supplying companies in the world. OSI Industries is currently listed on Forbes as #58 of the largest American private owned companies with revenue of over $6 Billion.

OSI Food Solutions, which won the 2016 Globe of Honour by the British Safety Council because of it excellence in the area of environmental safety, has met impressive business milestones under President and COO, David McDonald’s senior tutelage as well as their CEO, Sheldon Lavin.
In August of 2016, OSI Food Solutions decided to purchase Baho Foods, a Dutch food company. Purchasing Baho foods was part of OSI’s strategy to add to its European business line. This acquisition, as COO, David McDonald emphasized, provides OSI Food solutions with a larger business presence in Europe. With the Baho purchase, OSI Food Solutions inherited exactly five subsidiaries with important processing plants in Germany and in the Netherlands. These five subsidiaries, which are located in Europe, include Gelderland Frischwaren, Q Smart Life, Bakx Foods, Henri van de Bilt, and Vital Convenience.
OSI Food Solutions has also initiated a plan to double its chicken production capacity in Spain. The implementation of a high volume production line in the European city of Toledo has significantly increased their production number to 24 thousand tons. This production number doubled from the original, 12 thousand ton limit. Currently OSI produces a total of 45 thousand tons of pork, chicken, and beef products. This new production initiative will also be a positive outcome for the Spanish city, and the general area, by bringing in more jobs to compensate for the scaling up of its production. These meat processing facilities, located in Toledo, Spain, have been in service since 1990. OSI Spain, which is a subsidiary of OSI Food Solutions, will manage this facility.
Jose Maria del Rio, the managing director of OSI Spain, noted that there has been an increase in the desire for chicken products over the past few years. Because of this increased need for chicken, OSI has taken extra steps to ensure that this new facility improves its sustainability and energy efficiency, moving forward. OSI Spain currently recycles heat that the equipment at these facilities use. This updated equipment has allowed OSI Spain to reduce its consumption of electricity by a fifth of what it was before enacting these key energy and sustainability changes.
